Separating truth from falsehood
For the vast majority of us, drinking hot tea in the summer is not at all thirst-quenching and makes us feel even hotter, which is not necessarily pleasant.
However, the Tuareg in the desert quench their thirst with boiling tea, but why? Human beings are homeothermic, this means that we are able to regulate our body temperature in order to keep it constantly regular.
Sweating allows the body to thermoregulate itself; therefore, when you consume a hot drink, it will trigger sweating and thus cool down the whole body.
Conversely, consuming a very cold drink in a particularly hot environment will require more effort from the body: it slows digestion, prevents the absorption of liquid and therefore does not hydrate.
So even in a heatwave, don't be afraid to drink a hot cup of tea ☺
