Rolled leaves of a beautiful reddish hue, a protected designation of origin, and a somewhat unpredictable yet reliable history – rooibos tea (Afrikaans for "red bush") is a small marvel in the world of teas. Caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants, rooibos also boasts numerous health benefits.
Health benefits
If rooibos has carved out a place for itself in Western markets, it's partly thanks to the composition of its red leaves. With few tannins and no caffeine at all, rooibos has a much less astringent finish than other strong teas. It therefore makes an excellent substitute for full-bodied black teas. Moreover, what rooibos lacks in theine and caffeine, it makes up for in antioxidants! These polyphenols protect the body from several ailments: stress, skin diseases, cardiovascular problems, cell aging… By preventing cells from oxidizing, the body manages to avoid many health issues!
Production and preparation
Strangely, rooibos seems to grow only in one place: South Africa. More precisely, in the Cederberg Mountains. This is despite various efforts to transplant plantations to areas with a similar climate!
In South Africa, rooibos tea is traditionally drunk hot, with milk and sugar. However, since its natural flavor is quite mild, rooibos can be enjoyed on its own, hot or cold! To prepare it, simply boil water (yes, really: rooibos requires boiling water at 100 degrees Celsius!) and steep the desired amount of tea for 7 to 10 minutes. You can then add a little honey, lemon, or sugar – rooibos pairs wonderfully with citrus flavors!
