Grog: a grandmother's remedy for minor colds
What is grog? Grog is a drink invented by Edward Vernon, an admiral in the British Navy. Seeing his sailors drinking heavily and frequently getting drunk, the admiral decided to dilute the rum they consumed with hot water. Later, lemon was added to the mixture for a small dose of vitamin C.
The drink's name comes from the nickname given to the admiral, whom the crew called "old grog".
As the crew consumed this drink, minor daily ailments such as colds and flu gradually disappeared; therefore, this drink was consumed for its “therapeutic” properties.
Grog is therefore a mixture of rum, boiling water, but also honey, sugar, cinnamon… the recipe can be adapted according to individual tastes.
