Mate: History and Origin

Mate is a traditional South American beverage consumed by the Guarani people. In French, mate can also be called “Jesuit Tea, Indian Tea”.
Mate plants are grown in a nursery; after about 6 months, the plants are harvested to be sown in fields so they can grow and thrive.
Yerba Mate is harvested only when the leaves are sufficiently mature.
Once harvested, the leaves are exposed to the heat of a fire to slow down the fermentation and oxidation processes. When the leaves are dried, they are crushed and then roasted to obtain the famous yerba mate.

Yerba mate: benefits and virtues

First of all, it's important to know that yerba mate is high in caffeine! Therefore, it is strongly recommended not to consume it after 4 PM!
However, mate is an excellent stimulant and anti-fatigue agent, just like green tea.
Yerba mate is very rich in antioxidants, thanks to the polyphenols it contains. It helps strengthen the body's natural defenses, boosts the immune system, and fights skin aging.
Yerba mate also helps improve cardiovascular health and lower bad cholesterol levels. Finally, yerba mate can be beneficial for people with hypertension.
Finally, mate is an ally for weight loss; it burns fat, prevents water retention, and improves digestion!

How to prepare maté

Mate is prepared easily, just like any other tea. Simply infuse 1 to 2 grams of tea in water heated to 90°C; the water should be boiling but not simmering!
You can drink one to two cups a day as a replacement for tea or coffee in order not to exceed the daily caffeine doses.
To consume more, consider decaffeinating it slightly; to do this, let it steep for one minute, discard the water, then pour fresh water over the remaining tea leaves to infuse!
