Everything you need to know about smoked tea

Tout savoir sur le thé fumé
Do you like tea with a strong, distinctive flavor? Then you probably like smoked tea! Not familiar with it? Here's everything you need to know about smoked tea.

History of smoked tea

Smoked tea is actually a black tea that was the result of an “accident”! The history of smoked tea dates back to the 1820s. The Chinese army was crossing the Fujian region and was looking for a place to rest.
The army was passing near a black tea plantation and decided to set up camp there. The tea leaves were stored in the drying room, but they weren't dry. To save his plantation, the tea grower decided to set fire to some roots and place the leaves on top to dry.
The black tea therefore ended up drying more quickly, but also absorbed the smell of smoke, which created the smoked tea we know today.
Smoked tea first achieved its greatest success in Europe before becoming known worldwide.
Smoked tea has a very pronounced and inimitable taste, notably featuring flavors of wood, smoke, bacon, but also pine or even notes of tobacco.

How do I prepare it?

To prepare smoked tea, you will need 30 cl of water heated to between 95 and 100 degrees Celsius for approximately 30 g of smoked tea.
The brewing time varies between 3 and 5 minutes depending on your preference. The longer the brewing time, the stronger the flavor will be.

How to taste it?

This tea pairs beautifully with savory foods; it's delicious at brunch, for example. It goes perfectly with salmon, eggs, and bacon. You can also use it in your cooking water to add a subtle smoky flavor to rice, Chinese noodles, and other dishes.
Finally, you can absolutely consume it during the day, accompanied by a square of milk chocolate to soften its flavor!
